A message from the dean

As part of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), I am pleased to share with you a report developed under the guidance of the Schirle Working Group, chaired by Jackie Gruber, director of EDI. The data analysis was prepared by Helen Mawdsley, educational specialist and assessment and evaluation lead in the Office of Education and Faculty Development.

This report compares compensation patterns for Rady Faculty female and male faculty and staff members in five groups: University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA), research academics, other academics, Excluded Management, Administrative and Professional Staff (EMAPS) and the Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES).

It is vitally important that we identify and eliminate barriers to achieving gender equity in compensation. We must work to eradicate gender-based pay gaps so that the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is an equitable workplace.

The key conclusions of the report are:

• Overall, females are represented more in the instructor ranks and assistant professor ranks, and males are represented more in the associate professor and professor ranks; however, this varies by college.

• More males than females increase their UMFA rank over the course of their career.

• Structured salary scales, as found in EMAPS and AESES, have a relatively comparable distribution of salary across genders; however, research academics and other academics have a greater representation of males at higher salaries.

Building on these insights, the working group plans to further examine application processes and the career impacts of time off. Next steps will include, but are not limited to:

• Review the promotion and tenure environment to explore why some seek an increase in rank, and some may pause on that.

• Review the ability and autonomy of research academics and other academics to negotiate their salaries, including merit increases.

• Dialogue with faculty and staff of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences about their experiences in pay, promotion and tenure.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this important document. It will assist the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences in understanding the current compensation picture and taking the next steps to ensure equity of opportunity and fair treatment for all.

Blood thinners decreased need for life support, improved outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Full dose anti-coagulation (blood thinner) treatments given to patients hospitalized for COVID-19 reduced the requirement of vital organ support in a large clinical trial conducted worldwide. With large numbers of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization, this treatment is expected to reduce the pressure in intensive care units around the world.

“In a disease with a limited number of effective therapies, our results have the potential to define a new standard of care for moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients around the world,” said Dr. Ryan Zarychanski, associate professor, hematologist and critical care physician at the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba. Read the full story. 

New Canada Research Chairs awarded 

Eleven new Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) have been awarded to University of Manitoba (UM) professors and seven of those are Max Rady College of Medicine faculty members. The new CRCs include Drs. Kristine Cowley, Britt Drögemöller, Terry Klassen, Zulma Rueda, Souradet Shaw, Elizabeth Wall-Wieler and Galen Wright. Read the full story. 

 

Study discovers new targets for MS treatment and potential early disease marker

Max Rady College of Medicine researchers have discovered that a specific protein has the potential to be used as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and could one day predict whether someone may develop the disease.  

The senior author of the study is Dr. Soheila Karimi, professor in the department of physiology and pathophysiology and senior scientist at the Regenerative Medicine Program, and the first author is Dr. Hardeep Kataria, a research associate on Karimi’s team. Read the full story. 

First Nations children face large gaps in health, well-being compared to other Manitoba kids

From a significantly lower rate of being breastfed at birth to much higher rates of diabetes, teen pregnancy and substance use disorders, the health of First Nations children is far from equal to that of other Manitoba children, a new study shows. The study is a joint project by the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM), the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC) and the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. Dr. Renée El-Gabalawy, professor of clinical health psychology, and anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, is preparing to study the use of virtual reality to ease the apprehension that many patients with breast cancer feel before surgery. Read the full RadyUM story.

As a renowned epidemiologist, Prabhat Jha [MD/88] leads massive research studies around the world, including projects in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and India. But when COVID-19 struck, he turned his attention to Canada. Read the full RadyUM story. 

Manitoba Virtual Care study needs to hear from you

Researchers studying Virtual Visits and Management of Primary Care in a Pandemic Environment, are seeking the input of primary care providers on the use of virtual care in Manitoba. You can participate in a focus group, by piloting a patient feedback system or attending a capstone event to develop recommendations. MPAS students ‘change, adapt, achieve’

The Master of Physician Assistant Studies program has the motto “Change, adapt, achieve.” While the motto has been used by Canada’s only graduate-level physician assistant program since its inception in 2008, the message is an important reminder in the age of COVID-19 for what’s needed to persevere during the pandemic. Grad students use infectious disease know-how during pandemic

Graduate students in the Max Rady College of Medicine’s department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases have been busy during the pandemic putting their expertise to excellent use. The students have formed local and international collaborations and worked on COVID-related research, outreach and knowledge translation. Read the full story.

Dr. Brian Postl, dean, Max Rady College of Medicine; dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and vice-provost (health sciences), was appointed to the Order of Canada for his leadership of and involvement in the advancement of clinical and academic health care in Manitoba.

Three Max Rady College of Medicine professors were named among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2020, by Women’s Executive Network. Drs. Meghan Azad, associate professor of pediatrics and child health, Sara Israels, professor of pediatrics and child health, and vice dean (academic affairs) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, and Soheila Karimi, professor of physiology and pathophysiology, and a senior scientist in the Regenerative Medicine Program, received the honour in three categories, respectively: Emerging Leaders, Professionals, and Science and Technology. Dr. Joan Durrant, professor of community health sciences, has been named a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and has also received the Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award: Bowman Established Researcher Rh Award.

Dr. Noralou Roos, a professor emerita of community health sciences, was awarded the Institute of Public Administration of Canada’s Vanier Medal. The award is given to a person who has shown great leadership in public administration and public service in Canada, or who has made a significant contribution in the field of public administration or public service in Canada. Meghan Azad, associate professor of pediatrics and child health, was awarded the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation Joe Doupe Young Investigators Award.

Natalie Rodriguez, Azad Lab program director, was named a finalist for this year's CBC Manitoba Future 40 Awards.

Dr. Tracie Afifi, professor of community health sciences, has been named president of the Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology. She will be the first Manitoban to be president of this important and prestigious association. And congratulations to Dr. James Bolton, associate professor of psychiatry, who was named co-president elect.

Dr. Mahmoud Torabi, professor of community health sciences, is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. 

Dr. Joel Kettner, associate professor of community health sciences, was part of a virtual panel discussion on Dec. 10, 2020, hosted by the Winnipeg Free Press titled 'Manitoba’s Pandemic, What went wrong and how do we make things right again?'

Dr. Marcelo Urquia, associate professor of community health sciences, has been elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Dr. Verena Menec, professor of community health sciences, has been named a Distinguished Member of the Canadian Association on Gerontology (CAG), recognizing her dedication to improving the lives of older Canadians.

Dr. George Zhanel, professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, won the 2020 Jim Parker Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases, Max Rady College of Medicine Undergraduate Student Teaching Award (selected by the Med 1 and Med 2 class).

The UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence awards has honoured the Kidney Check program with two international prizes. The Kidney Check team, which brings preventive kidney care to rural and Indigenous communities across Canada, was honoured with the Best of North America award and was one of three teams to receive UNIVANTS’ highest honour, the Global Winner award. Dr. Soheila Karimi, professor of physiology and pathophysiology, scientist with Regenerative Medicine Program and CHRIM, was awarded $399,400 from the MS Society of Canada for Role and Therapeutic Potential of Neuregulin-1 in Multiple Sclerosis.

Weston Brain Institute, Ji Hyun Ko, assistant professor of human anatomy and cell science (PI), 08/2020 – 11/2023. Transformational Research: Canada 2019 (Parkinson’s & Related Diseases). Changes in metabolic activity and gait function by dual-task cognitive game-based treadmill system intervention. Project Award: $1,499,758 (CAD). 

Dr. Souradet Shaw began an appointment as an assistant professor of community health sciences, and a Tier 2 CRC in Global Public Health, at the Institute of Public Health, on January 1, 2021. Souradet received his PhD in 2018 from the University of Manitoba in the department of community health sciences. His PhD dissertation focused on gaining a deeper understanding of complexity in the epidemiology of sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections in Winnipeg, from the lens of context-based analyses.

In October 2020, two new staff members joined the Azad Lab: Larisa Lotoski, research associate, and Nicole Fiorentino, project coordinator.

Suzanne Doyle is retiring as manager, education programs – Internal Medicine, on Feb. 26, 2021. Melissa Franzmann has been hired effective Oct. 5, 2020 to replace her.
