A message from the dean

March 2021 brought mixed emotions, introspection and hope.

March marked the one-year anniversary of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in our province and the subsequent closure of the University of Manitoba and the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences to in-person teaching. I still remember the anxiety of the students, staff, faculty and administration as we wound down our clinical operations with reports of COVID-19 cases rising daily (although at the time we did not realize the case numbers were very small compared to what would come later). One year later, we have witnessed amazing progress and a significantly better understanding of this disease.

Our ability to navigate the year in a safe manner at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry was through the hard work, sacrifice and vigilance of all involved, and for that I am grateful.

We now seem to have reached yet another turning point in our journey.

The arrival of vaccines in Manitoba has started one of the most extensive public health drives to ensure everyone in our province will be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. In order to facilitate this task a ministerial health order was announced inviting our students and clinical faculty members to become vaccinators.

The community spirit amongst our students and faculty was impressive and was mirrored by the profession. Several students and faculty have now completed the Red River College vaccinator course and have been called upon to serve in vaccination centres. The response has been so positive that we are now investigating the proposition of introducing vaccination into our curriculum where future generations of health care providers will be taught the necessary skills to vaccinate safely.

In addition to the provincial request for assistance, Ongomiizwin Health Services and the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences have also put out a call to faculty and students to assist in vaccination efforts for all First Nations communities in Manitoba.

In both these instances we need to commit to these efforts to extend the umbrella of vaccine protection to as many of our fellow citizens as possible. This is a historic moment for our province and one that will only be successful in preventing more illness and death from the virus if we all contribute. I urge each and every one of you to commit to this effort, if you are able to do so.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
