Dr. Delia Douglas, the Director of the Office of Antiracism ensured we knew that this Antiracism Policy was a starting point in addressing the pervasive racism within the Faculty, and that the policy itself was not the thing that would disrupt racism but rather the day to day actions across settings to fully implement the aspirations of the policy.

As we discussed the policy and our dual goals of disrupting racism within the Faculty and training health professionals who can deliver healthcare free of racism, we discussed how important it was that our partner clinical organizations also developed and implemented antiracism policies. We have seen the challenges in responding to racism in a clinical setting if the person causing harm was not a member of our Faculty, and we have seen the challenges of undermining teaching on cultural safety and antiracism if learners don’t see that role modelled in their clinical settings.

Over the years we have advocated for and supported the development of antiracism policies through participating on Shared Health’s Disrupting Racism Steering Committee. In April 2026 Shared Health released two policies: an Anti-Racism Policy and an Addressing Racism Towards First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples Policy. These policies are supported by guides that have been developed for Patients, Families, Visitors and Staff. Other Service Delivery Organizations like Northern Regional Health Authority and Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority have also approved antiracism policies, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is actively working on theirs.

We know that racism continues to cause harm in health care and in health professional training environments. Racial climate surveys, research and Manitoba’s own race-based data document this clearly and support the narratives that too many patients tell. However, I am hopeful about the potential impact of structural interventions like aligned antiracism policies, antiracism practice standards, accreditation standards, and mandatory education. Structural interventions alone are not enough: we each need to be building our practices of critical self-reflection, anti-bias moments, and seeking active feedback to ensure our impacts are aligned with our intentions to provide health care that is free of racism.

For further support, consider enrolling in the We Will Take Good Care of the People training and taking advantage of the Connect with a Coach option.
