Dr. Reg Urbanowski reappointed dean of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences

Dr. Brian Postl, dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and vice-provost (Health Sciences), is pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Reg Urbanowski as dean, College of Rehabilitation Sciences, for a five-year term commencing July 1, 2021.

Dr. Urbanowski joined the College of Rehabilitation Sciences as dean and associate professor in 2016. Major achievements as dean include the completion of a strategic plan and subsequent report cards for the college, the creation and implementation of two new research-based tenure track positions, and the establishment of the college’s partnership with eight First Nation communities in Manitoba which represent an innovative, collaborative approach to community engagement with the goal to bring the college’s services to each community based on their self-identified needs.

New Gerry McDole Professor to test virtual-reality yoga for stroke rehabilitation

Dr. Amine Choukou has been awarded the Gerry McDole Professorship in Improved Healthcare Delivery to Rural, Remote and Underserved Populations of Manitoba. The professorship, funded by AstraZeneca Canada, will enable Choukou to develop and test a VR-based rehabilitation program to help stroke survivors rebuild their physical and cognitive abilities.

The College of Rehabilitation Sciences celebrated the accomplishments of students in the occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy and MSc rehabilitation sciences programs in virtual Winter Awards Ceremony on March 18.

Occupational therapy student honoured by Manitoba 150

Reagan Croy, a first-year occupational therapy student at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences was taken by surprise when she found out she was named to Honour 150, a list that recognizes people who “stand out for their role in making Manitoba such an amazing province.”

A trio of second-year occupational therapy students from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences has created a toolkit for coping during the COVID-19 pandemic targeted at seniors and adults with limited resources.

Students receive Rady Faculty Dean’s Prize

Taryn Rampling, who received her master of occupational therapy from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, and Brenda Tittlemier, a doctoral student in Applied Health Sciences, a joint program of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, were among nine Rady Faculty of Health Sciences students who received the Dean’s Graduate Student Achievement Prize for 2020.

Dr. Joanne Parsons, assistant professor of physical therapy in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, was among six Rady Faculty of Health Sciences women who received 2020 leadership development awards through The Winnipeg Foundation’s Martha Donovan Fund.

Emergency Liaison

In January 2020, Helen Clark was about to travel to New York as part of an international initiative to improve Winnipeg’s 911 system when she heard about a virus in China that would dominate her work for the year ahead.

Born in England, Clark immigrated to Canada as a child, growing up in Winnipeg. She graduated with a diploma in respiratory therapy in 1979 from the Health Sciences Centre (HSC), in the program that would become the degree program currently offered in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Research Manitoba: Robots allow family members to ‘drop in’ on loved ones living with dementia

Promoting Outdoor Walking among Older Adults: Overview of the Getting Older adults OUTdoors (GO-OUT) Randomized Trial

Speakers: Dr. Ruth Barclay and Dr. Nancy Salbach

Dr. Nancy Salbach is a physical therapist and professor in the department of physical therapy at the University of Toronto. She is also an adjunct scientist at KITE-Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network, and the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

Dr. Ruth Barclay is an associate professor of physical therapy in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences. She is a co-PI of a CIHR-funded multi-centre trial of an outdoor walking intervention for older adults – Getting Older adults OUTdoors (GO-OUT) and PI of a CIHR-funded project on community ambulation using Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging data.

Decolonizing Leisure: An Indigenous Critique

Speaker: Dan Henhawk

Dr. Dan Henhawk is Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) person from the Six Nations of the Grand River community in southern Ontario. He is currently an assistant professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Henhawk’s current research program is focused on continuing to explore the intersections of leisure and Indigenous ways of knowing and being, specifically within the area of Indigenous land-based practices and education. Broadly, his research questions the intersections of leisure and Indigenous movements for decolonization and cultural resurgence.
