Oral cancer screening clinic held at Health Sciences Centre

More than 100 people were screened for oral cancer at a free clinic led by oral pathologists from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.

The eight-hour clinic was held at the Health Sciences Centre on February 2.

“The screening clinic went very well,” said Dr. Vimi Mutalik, associate professor of dental diagnostic and surgical sciences, and division head of oral diagnosis.

“We had a steady flow of participants throughout the event, and the clinic ran smoothly thanks to the excellent teamwork and organization of everyone involved.”

Mutalik and Dr. Mohamad-Hasan Kadhim, an assistant professor of dental diagnostic and surgical sciences at UM’s dental school, organized the event. The clinic was supported by three faculty members, six grad perio residents, close to 10 staff members and about 15 dental and dental hygiene student volunteers.

“The event provided an important opportunity to raise awareness about oral cancer and the importance of early detection. It was very encouraging to see strong participation from both the public and members of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry,” Mutalik said.

“Oral cancer can often go unnoticed in its early stages because many lesions are painless, and patients may not be aware of them. Screening clinics help identify suspicious lesions early when treatment outcomes are significantly better. They also provide an opportunity to educate the public about risk factors, signs and symptoms, and the importance of regular oral examinations.”

The event was supported by the Community Engagement Fund.

The event organizers have also held oral cancer screening clinics on UM’s Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses over the past couple of years.
