Dr. Noriko Boorberg, associate professor, was the recipient of a 2020 UM Merit Award in Service.
Dr. Tom Colina, part-time clinical instructor and lecturer, has earned Diplomate status in the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Vivianne Cruz de Jesus, a PhD candidate in oral biology, was awarded the 2021 Dean of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Student Achievement Prize.
Dr. Gayle Halas, assistant professor, received Seed Project funding from UM’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Fund for the project Experiential Student Learning to Enhance Interprofessional Collaboration in Healthcare Practice: A Scoping Review of Educational Strategies Beyond the Classroom. It has been funded to the amount of $5,000.
Dr. Lee McFadden, assistant professor, received the D.S. Precious Memorial Award from the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. The award was established to recognize the Fellow that embodies the qualities for which Dr. David S. Precious was known and well-respected, such as outstanding leadership within the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and significant contributions to dental specialty practice and education.
Dr. John Perry, associate dean (academic), is the recipient of the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Award of Merit. The honour recognizes an individual who has served in an outstanding capacity in the governing or service of the CDA over a sustained period of time, or who has made similar outstanding contributions to the dental profession, the dental community or the oral health of Canadians and society at large.
Kathy Yerex, assistant professor at the School of Dental Hygiene, recently presented her masters research that looked at the oral microbiome of humans with tooth resorption and investigated the potential connections to the oral microbiome of cats. It’s the first study of its kind looking at the oral microbiome of humans with tooth resorption. Kathy is graduating this October with her master of science in oral biology.
Yerex is also a recipient of a Martha Donovan Women’s Leadership Development Award, which provides leadership development opportunities for women in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. Read more.

STUDENTS
Dr. Hamideh Alai-Towfigh was the runner-up for both the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s 2020-21 Dr. Keith Titley Pediatric Dentistry Graduate Training Scholarship and the 3M Oral Care-CAPD/ACDP Graduate Student Research Presentation Awards.
Dr. Matt Brown, a third-year orthodontist resident, was selected as one of only 25 world-wide residents to share his master’s research in the Dr. William Proffit research competition at the American Association of Orthodontists meeting in Miami in May.
Isabella Sarzynski‘s B.Sc. (Dent.) project was accepted for the Student Poster Competition at the American Dental Education Association’s meeting in Philadelphia in March. Her paper on survival of implants and effects on adjacent teeth has great potential for being published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
