With sterilization and infection control requirements in dentistry becoming more stringent and regulated, a Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry research team – that includes Drs. Robert Drummond, Billy Wiltshire and Ms. Cindy Isaak-Ploegman – were inspired to present the results of a project undertaken last year in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic at the annual Canadian Association of Orthodontists meeting in September 2019 in Fredricton, N.B. The project evaluated the role of Iodine in controlling water quality during orthodontic patient care.
At the meeting, Drs. Robert Drummond, Graduate Orthodontic Clinic director, and Billy Wiltshire, professor and head of orthodontics, met with alumnus Dr. Sean Corsini, who is the inventor and lead programmer for STERISIMPLE, and an active practicing specialist orthodontist in Ontario. Dr. Corsini is a 2002 graduate of the MSc. specialty program in orthodontics at the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Corsini visited graduate orthodontics in January and met with members of the orthodontic clinical staff, Cindy Isaak-Ploegman, infection control coordinator for the college, and Johan Schalkwyk, director of clinical operations, and graduate orthodontic residents. He demonstrated his new invention.
The STERISPORE is used to document every single step of dental instrument reprocessing and use and consists of three components:
- STERISPORE – spore test monitoring & documentation
- STERIREADER – cycle logging and label production
- STERIRECALL – instrument tracking and patient use
The Manitoba role players had fruitful discussions with Dr. Corsini who is donating his product for use in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic.
