The following awards were presented at the Manitoba Dental Association Graduation Breakfast on May 16, 2024.

Teaching awards

Dentistry 4 class chose the following recipients for the 2023-2024 awards:

  • Dr. Trenna Reeve – Most Outstanding Teaching Award 
  • Carley Tokar – Exceptional Support Staff Award   

Dental hygiene 3 class chose the following recipients for the 2023-2024 awards:

  • Kaleigh Warden – Most Outstanding Teaching Award
  • Lorraine Reinfort – Exceptional Support Staff Award 

Dentistry awards

Michelle Cea-Flores

  • Canadian Academy of Periodontology Award of Excellence: For the student who is outstanding in periodontology.

Kira Goldstone-Joubert

  • American Academy of Periodontology Award: For the student who is outstanding in the discipline of periodontology.

Ocean Hingley-Hurl

  • Mary Jane Ego Trophy: This trophy is awarded through votes by fellow classmates for: Academic performance; cooperation shown fellow students and staff; quality of care rendered to patients and ability to get along with them; and participation in extracurricular activities with emphasis on CLASS activities and athletics. This is a unique and important award, since recognition by one’s peers is one of the highest honours one can receive.

Kai Kim

  • Dr. Isadore Wolch Prize in Endodontics: Awarded to the student who has achieved high standing in Endodontic Literature Review Seminars, demonstrated high skill and aptitude in endodontic treatments, and who shows the broadest interest in the field of endodontics.

Taylor Kostyshyn

  • American Association of Endodontists Award: For the student with high standing in endodontics.

Stephen Le Roux

  • Dr. M.H. Garvin Prize in Periodontology: For the student who has demonstrated high scholastic achievement in Periodontology, has displayed conscientious concern in the care of patients, and gives promise of displaying a high level of professional responsibility.
  • American Academy of Oral Medicine: Awarded to the student who is outstanding in the field of oral diagnosis and radiology within general practice dentistry.

Mitchell Lyall

  • The Portnoy Award: For the student who has initiated and completed a challenging and comprehensive restorative treatment in the General Practice Clinic and/or within the Interdisciplinary Case Studies course.

Navnoor Mann

  • The Dr. Alvin Shinoff Award: For the student who has developed outstanding treatment plans in the General Practice Clinic and/or within Interdisciplinary case studies courses.
  • Certificate of Merit AAPD Predoctoral Student Award: Awarded to the student who is outstanding in the field of Dentistry for children.

Anna Nguyen

  • Golden Scaler Award: For the student who has achieved high standing in fourth-year Clinical Periodontics by demonstrating overall clinical excellence, efficiency in completing clinic requirements, and an outstanding clinical performance.

Ayodeji Omotayo

  • Dr. Daniel Tai Humanitarian Award in Dentistry: For the student who has been voted by his/her graduating class as the most compassionate and unselfish practitioner, and a person who has shown the willingness to always help others.
  • Class of ’99 Dr. Lawrence Stockton Memorial Prize: Awarded to a graduating student in the International Dental Degree Program (IDDP) who has demonstrated the most improvement in the field of restorative dentistry (including the disciples of operative dentistry, fixed prosthodontics, and endodontology) during their two years in the IDDP program. Has also demonstrated a strong ability to communicate with academics and support staff, patients and fellow students; and has qualities of a positive role model to fellow students. 
  • American Association of Public Health Dentistry Award: Awarded to the student who has demonstrated a special interest and achievement in Community Dentistry Externship and Dental Public Health.
  • Dr. H.H. Saunderson Award: For the student who has demonstrated proficiency in clinical dentistry; has revealed qualifications of leadership and exemplary attitudes towards patients, fellow students, the college, the dental profession and society at large, and who also gives promise of continuing to display a high level of professional and personal responsibility.
  • Dr. Biruta Anna Osins Medal and Award in Endodontics: For the student with a minimum GPA of 3.5 who demonstrates the highest involvement in the field of endodontics through clinical or research proficiency in the endodontic course; or has achieved the highest academic standing in the Advanced Topics in Endodontics course.

Eileen Ovaisy

  • Dr. W. Walker Shortill Practice Management Memorial Scholarship: For the student who demonstrates high academic standing and communication skills in the Practice Management course. 

Nathan Peters

  • Canadian Dental Association Student Leadership Award: For the student who has shown outstanding qualities of leadership, scholarship, character and humanity; and is expected to have a distinguished career in the dental profession.
  • Endowment Fund Award in Dentistry: Awarded to the student in fourth year dentistry who has: A high achievement in the current year of study; the ability to communicate well with academic staff, support staff, patients and fellow students; and is a positive role model for other students.
  • Alpha Omega Fixed Partial Denture Prosthesis Award: Awarded to the student who has achieved high standing in fourth-year fixed partial denture prosthesis and who has demonstrated exemplary professional demeanour.
  • American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Award: Awarded to the student with highest standing in the radiology portion of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology within General Practice Dentistry.

Emily Schumacher

  • Graduation with Honours: Honours in third and fourth year.
  • Dean’s Honours: Minimum GPA of 3.8 in the fourth year.
  • University Gold Medal: Awarded to the student who has achieved the highest grade point average for the last two years of full-time study in the dentistry program.
  • Dr. John W. Clay Medal & Prize: For the student who has attained the highest overall average in the four years of dentistry.
  • Alpha Omega Fraternity Award: For the student with the highest scholastic average in the four years of the dentistry program.
  • The Maclachlan-Hart Gold Medal for Complete Denture Prosthesis: Awarded to the student who has demonstrated proficiency in Complete Denture Prosthesis throughout the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Sophie Kanee Memorial Prize in Dental Jurisprudence: For the student who achieves the highest standing in the course Dental Jurisprudence.
  • American Association of Orthodontics Award: For the student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in clinical orthodontics.
  • American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Award: Awarded to the student with highest standing in the courses of Pathology & Microbiology.

Shubleen Sidhu

  • Dr. Reda Elgazzar Oral Surgery Prize: Awarded to the student who has achieved high standing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2; and who has demonstrated a high standard of professionalism.

Minkyung Song

  • Dr. F.W.L. Hamilton Scholarship: For the student attaining excellence in Operative Dentistry in the fourth year.
  • The Mary Jane Ego Scholarship: For the student who attains the highest standing in Oral Surgery.
  • Dr. John Earl Abra Scholarship in Orthodontics: For the student who achieves the highest standing in fourth-year Orthodontics.

Dental hygiene awards

Sarah MacDonald

  • Manitoba Dental Association Prize: Awarded to the student who attains the highest standing in the third-year program.

Madeline Penner

  • Dr. Frances Matiowsky Memorial Award: Awarded to a senior student who had demonstrated concern for patients, fellow students, and the faculty in general and who has maintained high academic standards.

Olivia Rodriguez

  • Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award: Awarded to the dental hygiene student who demonstrates a high level of development in instrumentation skills, particularly with challenging clients as identified by the clinical faculty.

Stacey Urban

  • Endowment Fund Award in Dental Hygiene Awarded to the student who has: High achievement in the current year of study; ability to communicate well with academic staff, support staff, patients and fellow students; leadership ability; and is a positive role model for other students.
  • College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba Leadership Prize: Awarded to the student who demonstrates: Promotion of peer morale, client advocacy, leadership qualities, ethical competency and volunteerism.
  • Manitoba Dental Association Gold Medal: Awarded to the student attaining the highest overall academic standing in the combined two-year dental hygiene curriculum.
  • School of Dental Hygiene Medal in Dental Hygiene: Awarded to the student who achieves the highest grade point average for courses constituting the two year program.
  • Dental Faculty Women’s Association Prize: Awarded to the student who attains the highest combined average in HYGN 2312, HYGN 2314, HYGN 2316 and HYGN 2318.
  • Maria Araceli Pacheco Memorial Award: Awarded to the student who, having successfully completed the second year Dental Hygiene program, achieves: a high combined average in HYGN 2312 & HYGN 2316 Clinical Dental Hygiene II and III, HYGN 2314 & HYGN 2318 Dental Hygiene Theory & Practice II and IV; and who demonstrates professional promise and concern for patients.

Ance Vincent                             

  • Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association Award: Awarded to the student with a high academic standing who recognizes and manages a client’s pain and anxiety by selecting appropriate pain interventions.
