Continuing Professional Development Dentistry & Dental Hygiene Upcoming Events

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Dentistry & Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba is the continuing education (CE) unit of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry. Every academic calendar year, as a department, we provide CE courses to the dental community at large both within Manitoba and across Canada. The highlights for our year include an Online Lecture Series and Certification courses for expanded scope of practice for dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists and the dental team.

The CPD Dentistry & Dental Hygiene Annual Brochure of the events planned for the 2024-2025 academic calendar year will be lead by our first event during Homecoming 2024 followed by the exciting developments for expanded scope of practice courses such as Therapeutic Use of Neuromodulators in Dentistry, Cone Beam Radiology – Best Practices for the Dental Provider, Crown Lengthening Technique for the General Dentist, Restorative Techniques for the Dental Hygienist, and Local Anesthetic Techniques for the Dental Hygienist.

Homecoming 2024: Graduate Periodontics Lecture and Community Dentist Appreciation Day

CPD Dentistry & Dental Hygiene, in conjunction with the Dr. Sam Borden Periodontology Clinic and the Graduate Periodontics Program at University of Manitoba are presenting a series of mini-lectures as part of a Homecoming 2024 event on Saturday, September 21, 2024. This event will also serve as a Community Dentist Appreciation Day, whereby the Periodontology Clinic and the members of the Graduate Periodontics Program at the University of Manitoba are looking forward to meeting their community partners in person, to express appreciation for their ongoing support. For the mini-lectures, the graduate periodontics residents will be covering a variety of topics under Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning and Peri-implant Maintenance, including advancements in non-surgical periodontal therapy, peri-implant maintenance, and use of ultrasound, artificial intelligence and robotics in periodontics and implantology. Participants will learn how to properly assess peri-implant tissues and be given tools to assess the risk for development of peri-implant diseases.

Therapeutic Use of Neuromodulators in Dentistry – full course series

Since the ratification of the Manitoba Dental Association’s Bylaw in December 2022, Manitoba Dentists have been able to add the use of neuromodulators and dermal fillers to their scope of practice through a series of certification courses offered by accredited providers. CPD Dentistry & Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba is one of those accredited providers and has developed a series of Botox courses to allow the Manitoba dentist to apply to the MDA to roster for the therapeutic and aesthetic use of neuromodulators and the use of dermal fillers in their dental practices. These courses have been designed to be delivered in a hybrid format that includes asynchronous online learning modules combined with in-person clinical sessions to make it most accessible for the individual learner but with the support of a dynamic Facial Therapeutic & Esthetic Educational Team that includes several University of Manitoba alumni, including Dr. Murray Fain (DMD ’83, OMFS ‘90, FRCD(C)), Dr. Sherif Elsaraj (BSc, MSc ‘06, DMD ’10, PhD), Dr. Mohamad-Hasan Kadhim (BSc ’12, DDS, OMOP, FRCD(C)), and Dr. Israa Elgazzar (BSc (Dent), DMD ’19).

Crown Lengthening Course

Subgingival caries and subgingival tooth fractures are often challenging for the general dentists. Surgical crown lengthening is a common procedure that can improve the restorative results of these challenging cases. Participants will learn the rationale for crown lengthening, the indications and proper treatment planning for surgical crown lengthening and receive hands-on experience in practicing crown lengthening. This course is comprised of three hours didactic lecture and three hours of hands-on experience on pig jaw specimens and anatomically correct plaster models, which will allow the participants to practice the basic and advanced surgical skills required for functional crown lengthening procedures. Course instruction will be provided by Dr. Chrysi Stavropoulou (DDS, MDent (Perio) ’18, FRCD(C)), Program Director, Graduate Periodontics, and Dr. Carlo Sgarbanti (DDS, MDent (Perio) ’21, Dip ABP), both of whom are faculty members of the Graduate Periodontics Program at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, University of Manitoba.

As the 2023-2024 academic calendar year draws to a close, CPD Dentistry & Dental Hygiene would like to thank our learners and educational partners and sponsors for their continued support of our programming.
