The Bannatyne campus is looking great thanks to students at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.
On Oct. 1, 38 dental and dental hygiene students, along with faculty and staff members, collected about 10 garbage bags of litter as well as needles, broken glass and other sharp debris.
The students split up into teams of three and spread out across the Bannatyne and Health Sciences Centre campuses for an hour and a half.
The initiative was organized by third-year dental student Liam Fergus, who is the environmental chair for the Manitoba Dental Student Association and leads the college’s Student Environmental Group, with support from Dr. John Perry, associate dean (academic).
“Helping the environment can seem overwhelming when you think of all the issues we have in our world right now, but if we all look after our local environments, those smaller changes will turn into larger changes. Every little bit helps,” Fergus said. “The event was extremely successful both in terms of the amount of garbage cleaned up and the participation of our students, being the most we’ve had yet.”
The group celebrated the event with donuts and hot chocolate.
“We spend a lot of time keeping teeth healthy, it was nice to get the chance to do the same thing for our environment,” Fergus said.
