A weekend of orthodontic biomechanics took place in September with Dr. Tarek El-Bialy, a visiting professor of orthodontics at the University of Alberta. He presented a hands-on biomechanics course for first- and second-year orthodontic residents.



Dr. Daniela Sens Nunes and Dr. Billy Wiltshire, department head of preventative dental science; division head of orthodontics; and program director of graduate orthodontics, at the Canadian Association of Orthodontists meeting in Quebec City in September. Orthodontic university faculty representatives from the University of British Columbia, Western University, the University of Montreal and the University of Manitoba at a dinner meeting at the Canadian Association of Orthodontists conference.

Dr. Billy Wiltshire and Dr. Anastasia Kelekis-Cholakis, dean of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, hosted a successful orthodontic alumni function in Calgary. Thanks go to Dr. Vic and Arpit Cheba and Brooke Karlaftis for making the arrangements.

XerosGuard was founded in 2019 by UM alumni Dr. Robert Ward and Dr. Randeep Chana. Following several iterations, XerosGuard has successfully secured intellectual property in Canada and the United States. Many orthodontists now use XerosGuard for enhanced isolation and compliance with current infection control standards. You will also see XerosGuard featured in an article by Dr. Colby Gage, head lecturer for Ormco, to be published in an upcoming issue of The Journal of Clinical Orthdontics.
XerosGuard is making their products available to our residents for use at no cost to the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic. On September 2, Dr. Robert Ward conducted a hands-on, in clinic tutorial with current residents.


Dr. Mahily Papineau and Dr. Abdul Alsaad were welcomed by Dr. Billy Wiltshire on the first day of their 36 month specialty program on July 7, 2025.

Under the guidance of Dr. Daniella Sens Nunes, Dr. Abdul Alsaad and Dr. Mahily Papineau successfully completed their first Typodont pre-clinical assignment of a Class II Div 1 Malocclusion on July 16. They started their first Typodont program on July 7 and have been busy at work ever since.
