The newest dentists and dental hygienists to graduate from the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry received their degrees on May 16 at the afternoon Spring Convocation ceremony on the Bannatyne campus.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the ceremony, Dr. Anastasia Kelekis-Cholakis<\/strong>, dean of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, commended the graduating students on their persistence and hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have worked during a pandemic under very challenging circumstances and are finally here to celebrate,\u201d Kelekis-Cholakis told the 35 doctor of dental medicine graduates (seven were in the International Dentist Degree Program (IDDP) and 24 School of Dental Hygiene graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Dale Porth<\/strong> said that completing his dentistry degree was a whirlwind of emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been a student for the last 10 years, so having everything come to an end is almost like an unreal moment, but I\u2019m just trying to soak it all in and enjoy it,\u201d said Porth, who grew up in Winnipeg and his family is from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Ayodeji Omotayo<\/strong> said he had a great experience at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI came in here as a dentist, but I\u2019m leaving here as a super dentist,\u201d said Omotayo, who practiced dentistry in Nigeria before coming to Canada and entering UM\u2019s IDDP. \u201cSomeone has refined you, has taken all those things you\u2019ve learnt and polished you up. I\u2019m leaving here with gratitude that I\u2019ve received this education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When dental hygiene graduate Olivia Rodriguez<\/strong> crossed the stage to receive her parchment, she was thinking that it wasn\u2019t the end but a new beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just the start,\u201d said Rodriguez, who will be working at a dental clinic in Winnipeg. \u201cThis is the beginning of a whole new life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
