This are two more schools than last year, and the children are now starting to arrive at the clinic on Fridays for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been going really well,\u201d said Dr. Jim Ksionzyk, assistant professor and director of undergraduate&nbsp;pediatric dentistry at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been rebuilding for the last couple of years, and we\u2019ve been trying to get the numbers up. We\u2019re expanding within the Winnipeg School Division, and there is interest from other school divisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New program sponsors \u2013 the Dr. Alfred E. Deacon Medical Research Foundation and the Cholakis Dental Group \u2013 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.umanitoba.ca\/um-childrens-dental-outreach-program-marks-25-years-of-caring-for-inner-city-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>joined in April<\/strong><\/a>, and it\u2019s been going great, Ksionzyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has allowed us to continue to provide care to hundreds of children each year, and I\u2019m thankful for their support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gurpreet Mauli, a pediatrics fellow last year, joined the program part-time, and there are plans to start a new joint clinic between the pediatrics and orthodontics programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be doing interceptive orthodontics, so we will be treating children that don\u2019t need braces now but hopefully we can do things for them to stop them from needing braces,\u201d Ksionzyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have started finding patients and they will be treated in the regular clinic until the joint clinic is launched a year from now, Ksionzyk said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new academic year is off to an excellent start for the Cholakis Dental Group: Kids Dental Outreach Program.
