Most of these represent \u201cground\nbreaking\u201d or \u201cfirst of their kind\u201d accomplishments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntraining and credentials Dr. Iacopino acquired provided the necessary knowledge\nand skill sets for a career dedicated to leading and implementing significant\ninstitutional transformations.&nbsp; He has\nbeen a \u201cnew breed\u201d of dental academician and educator that effectively\ncontributed to a broad range of innovations, reforms and mandates.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout\nhis career at different institutions, within disparate cultures and tasked with\nvery diverse initiatives, he has demonstrated accomplishments and leadership in\nboth faculty and administrative roles that has resulted in significant\ncultural, curricular and structural change across multiple institutions of\nvarying size, mission and location throughout North America. Some of his\naccomplishments have changed the landscape of the dental profession and the\nfuture of primary healthcare approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nhis time in New Jersey at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Iacopino\nwas the first National Institutes of Health Dental Scientist trainee, setting\nthe stage for numerous DMD\/PhD trainees that have followed. This marked the\nbeginning of a cultural change that would encourage and support those seeking\nacademic and alternate career pathways in dentistry, an area for which this\nschool is now recognized.&nbsp; His activities\nin geriatric and community dentistry, highlighted by serving as director for\nthe world\u2019s first dental clinic specific for Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s disease\npatients, were the beginnings of a curriculum and community outreach portfolio\nthat have become widely recognized for their scope and service.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nTexas, at the Texas A&amp;M Baylor College of Dentistry, Dr. Iacopino\u2019s\ninitiatives to \u201cmodernize\u201d research facilities and approaches have resulted in\nan environment that has transformed Baylor into a highly regarded and highly\ncompetitive dental research institution. Additionally, several dental schools\nhave replicated Dr. Iacopino\u2019s innovative model for student research that\nincreases student engagement, external support and interest in academic and\nresearch careers.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nWisconsin, at the Marquette University School of Dentistry, Dr. Iacopino\npopularized concepts regarding the role of \u201cresearch non-intensive\u201d dental\nschools in the national agenda and the importance of creating a culture of\n\u201csophisticated consumers of research\u201d leading to the creation of the National\nInstitutes of Health NIDCR R25 grant program.&nbsp;\nThis program was ultimately responsible for significant culture change\nat Marquette and several other dental schools creating a \u201cnational movement\u201d\ntoward making research and scholarship part of the daily fabric of dental\neducation.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long\nbefore interprofessional education was formally defined and recognized, Dr.\nIacopino was actively leading and participating in interprofessional education\nand training as Director of the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Centre.&nbsp; The interprofessional web-based resources he\ndeveloped have served as an international resource for geriatric education and\ntraining programs worldwide.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nWinnipeg, at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Iacopino\u2019s tenure as dean has\nmarked the greatest period of innovation and transformation in the school\u2019s\nhistory.&nbsp; The development of the Rady\nFaculty of Health Sciences (the largest interprofessional faculty in Canada),\nglobal improvement in all aspects of the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of\nDentistry and the world\u2019s first International Centre for Oral-Systemic Health\nrepresent a singular legacy. He is one of the first internationally recognized\nleaders in oral-systemic health and interprofessional education and\npractice.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His\ncollaborations with government and healthcare networks in oral-systemic health\nand interprofessional care have resulted in system and policy changes\nsupporting new comprehensive healthcare and community practice models that\nbetter serve the needs of Americans and Canadians.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nsummary, Dr. Iacopino has dedicated his entire career to changing cultures and\nleading change and innovation in four very different dental schools within the\nUnited States and Canada, one student and one institution at a time.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nPierre Fauchard Academy was to be present the Dentist Citation Award to Dr.\nIacopino in Winnipeg in April.
