Dr. Bruce is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, where she received her bachelor of nursing in 1984, her master of arts in 1993, and her PhD in 1999.

Dr. Bruce joined the Max Rady College of Medicine as an assistant professor in 2001. She currently serves as a professor in the department of community health sciences.

Dr. Bruce has a substantial record of achievement in community health sciences in the areas of teaching, research and service.

She is a medical anthropologist and community-based researcher. Her areas of expertise include the epidemiology and impact of diabetes, changing the organization and structure of chronic disease health services for First Nations people, and women’s health in marginalizing contexts. Her research is guided by participatory frameworks, and she works in partnership with First Nations communities and NGOs (local, national and global). She is recognized nationally and internationally for her work in diabetes and in maternal and child health. 

Since 2001, her primary research partner has been Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. Through this partnership she has created the only population-based longitudinal data set in Canada dedicated to addressing the diabetes epidemic, and has made significant contributions to the knowledge base on diabetes and Canadian First Nations populations.

In addition to her research program with Sandy Bay, Dr. Bruce is the Manitoba co-lead for the Canadian HIV Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Cohort Study.
