Dr. Marissa Becker<\/strong>, professor of community health sciences and director of technical collaborations at the Institute for Global Public Health, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Prioritizing Place in Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infection prevention in Kenya: Reframing prevention programs through Program Science<\/em> ($975,375 over five years). Dr. Keith Fowke<\/strong>, department head and professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, <\/strong>and Dr. Titus Olukitibi<\/strong>, postdoctoral fellow in medical microbiology and infectious diseases, received a Research Manitoba RMB grant for a study titled Bridging HIV and STBBIs Science and Educational Outreach in Winnipeg<\/em> ($72,000.00 for one year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Jason Kindrachuk<\/strong>, associate professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases and Canada Research Chair in molecular pathogenesis of emerging viruses, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Characterization of long-term sequelae and immune signatures in Ebola virus disease survivors from 1976-2014 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/em> ($100,000 for one year). Dr. Julie Lajoie<\/strong>, assistant professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, received a CANFAR grant for a study titled Effect of menopause on HIV infection<\/em> ($40,000 for one year). And also a Manitoba Medical Service Foundation grant for a study titled How menopause affects the immune response<\/em> ($45,000 over one year)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Jonathan McGavock<\/strong>, professor of pediatrics and child health, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Honoring Ourselves and the Land \u2013 Reducing inequities in trail use for First Nations and M\u00e9tis people in urban centres in Manitoba<\/em> ($1,266,075 over five years). Dr. Donald Miller<\/strong>, professor of pharmacology and therapeutics, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Improving therapeutic outcomes in medulloblastoma through optimizing brain delivery of agents targeting inhibitors of apoptosis proteins<\/em> ($592,876 over four years). Dr. Thomas Murooka<\/strong>, associate professor of immunology, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Role of mucosal neutrophils in driving HIV\/HPV infection and disease progression<\/em> ($1,139,850 over five years). Read more<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Liam O\u2019Neil<\/strong>, assistant professor of internal medicine, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Cigarette smoking induced neutrophilic inflammation as a modifiable risk factor for Rheumatoid Arthritis in First Nations<\/em> ($100,000 for one year). Dr. B\u00e1rbara Porto<\/strong>, assistant professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, Dr. Zulma Rueda<\/strong>, Canada Research Chair in sexually transmitted infection \u2013 resistance and control and associate professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, and Dr. Yoav Keynan<\/strong>, professor of internal medicine, received a Canadian International Development Agency grant titled Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) & Study in Canada Scholarships (SICS) Program 2024\/2025<\/em>. The department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases is pleased to welcome the successful scholars, Will Anderson Riano Echavarria<\/strong> (Keynan), Paula Coelho Teixeira<\/strong> (Porto), and Liliana Lopez Manjarres<\/strong> (Rueda).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Dr. Inna Rabinovich-Nikitin<\/strong>, assistant professor of physiology and pathophysiology, received a CIHR grant to study what could one day lead to new treatments to reduce the risk of heart disease in people with disrupted circadian rhythms ($1,032,750 over five years). Dr. Zulma Rueda<\/strong>, Canada Research Chair in sexually transmitted infection \u2013 resistance and control and associate professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases received a Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Inc. grant for a study titled Host-Pathogen interaction and its lung implications in people living with HIV and affected by pneumonia<\/em> ($15,000 over two years). And also a University of Manitoba grant for a study titled Me-Med BV for potential use as a bedside diagnostic test to guide community-acquired treatment<\/em> ($10,000 over one year). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Deanna Santer<\/strong>, assistant professor of immunology, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Role of type III interferons in regulating mucosal immunity in a healthy gut versus ulcerative colitis<\/em> ($967,725 over five years). Read more<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Jarret Woodmass<\/strong>, assistant professor of surgery, received a CIHR grant for a project titled Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with and without subscapularis repair: Randomized controlled trial evaluating patient-reported and clinical outcomes<\/em> ($455,175 over five years). Dr. George Zhanel, <\/strong>associate department head and professor of medical microbiology and infectious, received a Merck Frosst Canada & Co contract for a study titled Using Whole Genome Sequencing to Assess Genetic Properties and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of the 8 Novel V116 Vaccine Serotypes 15A, 15C, 16F, 23A, 23B, 24F, 31, 35B in Canada: CANWARD 2011-2020<\/em> ($130,703 over two years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
