{"id":705,"date":"2020-12-22T10:50:39","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T15:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/?p=705"},"modified":"2020-12-22T10:53:24","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T15:53:24","slug":"special-guest-lecturer-at-parkland-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/special-guest-lecturer-at-parkland-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"Special guest lecturer at parkland unit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-707 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/AlexLytwyn2020.jpg\" alt=\"Alex Lytwyn with his guide dog\" width=\"247\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/AlexLytwyn2020.jpg 720w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/AlexLytwyn2020-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/AlexLytwyn2020-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/12\/AlexLytwyn2020-480x640.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/>On Thursday, September 24, 2020, the Parkland Unit hosted Winnipegosis resident Alex Lytwyn to talk about disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Alex, who uses a wheelchair and has the support of a guide dog, presented a well-developed power point presentation to the 11 trainees and some faculty\/staff.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the session was to meet one of the educational objectives within the family medicine curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Alex was able to discuss his background since childhood and showcase his challenges and successes to date.<\/p>\n<p>Further, during this COVID-19 pandemic and self-isolation, Alex was able to share his experiences which many could be feeling during this time.<\/p>\n<p>By completing this session via MB Telehealth, we were able to welcome a guest that might otherwise have had more challenges to accommodate in person (ie. cost of transportation, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Interaction was very good and residents asked some very important questions.<\/p>\n<p>Alex\u2019s zest for life and ability to overcome challenges faced, left the group in awe of his journey.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback on this day was overwhelmingly positive and it is hoped to continue to nurture this relationship in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Alex has much knowledge to share and we very much enjoyed this presentation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Now in its twenty-eighth year of operation, the Parkland Family Medicine Residency Unit, located in Dauphin, is a training site for the University of Manitoba, department of family medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Its aim is to prepare physicians with knowledge, skills and attitudes for rural family practice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, September 24, 2020, the Parkland Unit hosted Winnipegosis resident Alex Lytwyn to talk about disabilities.
