In celebration of National Nursing Week, it was inspiring to connect with our alumni and hear their compelling stories about their unique contribution in providing quality health care and advancing the profession of nursing. 

“Answering the call” on National Nursing Week

National Nursing Week was marked on May 10 – 16, with the theme “we will answer the call” inspired by the important role nurses have played during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The College of Nursing honoured the week with an online celebration on May 12 featuring a keynote presentation by Shared Health chief nursing officer and UM alumna Lanette Siragusa.

Nursing PhD, master's grad speak to Parliament about cancer, COVID

Tara Horrill, who is set to graduate with her PhD from the College of Nursing on June 15, and Anisa Isse, who earned a UM nursing master's degree in 2019, both had the rare opportunity to speak to members of Parliament over the last two months.

The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) accreditation bureau has granted accreditation of the College of Nursing bachelor of nursing program.

The College of Nursing awarded five students in its master’s and PhD programs at the annual Helen Glass Research Symposium (HGRS) Graduate Student Poster Competition on April 29 as part of the three-day online event.

The College of Nursing is hosting a new multidisciplinary course this fall that will explore the role, experiences and needs of family caregivers.

Interprofessional program addresses racism in health care

With its mandate of preparing health sciences students for interprofessional collaborative practice, the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences’ Office of Interprofessional Collaboration (OIPC) focused on the topic of racism in health care when welcoming over 600 first-year students earlier this year in a pair of virtual events that spanned four campuses and nine programs.

Nursing students adapt workshops to inspire youth virtually

Despite having to take an entirely new approach, a team of volunteer students from the College of Nursing welcomed nearly 80 youth from across the city to explore nursing careers as part of the CanU Inspire and Explore programs this past fall and winter.

Passion for northern Manitoba

Fourth-year UM nursing student Cassie Palidwor had one of her “most memorable and eye-opening” experiences in March when she flew with a public health nurse via helicopter into the remote community of Granville Lake, Man. to assist in COVID-relief efforts.

First Nations clinic uses vaccines just in time

Instructor Pat Pruden was recently part of a team of 10 nurses who administered COVID-19 vaccines at a First Nations-run clinic in Winnipeg.

Lynn Scruby receives community engagement award

College of Nursing assistant professor Dr. Lynn Scruby was recently awarded a University of Manitoba Community Engagement Award, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Two new videos have been created for College of Nursing programs. One is for the Mahkwa omushki kiim: Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education (PINE) program for students of Indigenous ancestry. The other is about our new Bachelor of Midwifery program.
