Five College of Nursing faculty members donned hard hats and volunteered at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences “Key to Health” build project for Habitat for Humanity Manitoba on June 14.

Working with two dedicated trained tradespeople, Christa Degagne, Lisa Banman, Asha Pereira, Wendy Ducharme and Terilyn Hunter all took part in the build of a four-bedroom townhouse on Pandora Avenue West in Transcona.

“We started out with repositioning a framed wall, spent time moving materials such as drywall and boards to units where needed, framed walls, and ended the day with a site clean-up.,” Degagne said.

For Degagne, it was her third time volunteering for a Habitat for Humanity build through the college.

“Habitat for Humanity is a great organization that supports families to secure housing. It is not a handout. The families are putting hours of sweat equity into the build of their home,” she said.

“Housing is a key determinant of health, and the Habitat for Humanity program offers an affordable homeownership solution. Families need to have stable housing in order to have equitable access to opportunities for health.”
