The College of Nursing held its first-ever Black History Month celebration on Feb. 3. The event included dance, spoken word and a cultural attire fashion show.
Held at the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing, the event featured a keynote address from Hon. Uzoma Asagwara, Minister of Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care.
Other speakers included Jacob Ahiaegbe from Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba, College of Nursing dean Dr. Kellie Thiessen and UM Vice-Provost (Equity) Dr. Tina Chen. The event was emceed by nursing students Hayley Nanyange and Jennifer Omulu.
College of Nursing instructor Shakerah Jones Hall organized the event to support Black and racialized students in the college and empower them to overcome barriers.
“With a significant number of Black students in the college, it was important to create a space where they felt a sense of belonging. The event highlighted their contributions, struggles, and achievements, making Black experiences more visible within the College of Nursing. It also provided an opportunity for students and staff to come together in celebration, fostering a stronger sense of community,” Jones Hall said.
