Dr. Nicole Harder and team (Verkuyl, M., Attack, L., Violato, E., Southam, T., Lavoie-Tremblay, M., Goldsworthy, S., Ellis, W., & Campbell, S.) recipient of Best Abstract Award Winner – Patient Safety category for their project entitled Student survey results from a pan-Canadian virtual simulation program at the Society in Europe for Simulation in Prague, Czech Republic. 

Dr. Jane Karpa, recipient of the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award from the Registered Psychiatric Nursing Foundation of Manitoba.

Dr. Kim Mitchell for receiving an Honourable mention for the 2023 Doreen Starke-Meyerring Award for the best article or chapter in writing and discourse studies for the article “Language as a proxy for race: Language and literacy and the nursing profession” published in Nursing Inquiry.

Dr. Michelle Lobchuk, associate professor, on her retirement following a stellar 36-year career in nursing and 21 years of exceptional teaching, research, service at the University of Manitoba.

Advanced education

  • Diane Cepanec, senior research manager, completed the UM LEAD Program in University Leadership, Her self-directed project was entitled Engaging Undergraduate Nursing Students in Research in a Three Term Model. She also celebrates 25 years of exemplary service.
  • Kim Workum attained the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) credential awarded by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

The following faculty members have graduated from the UM Teaching and Learning Certificate Program:

Expert appointments

  • Dr. Mandy Archibald, assistant professor, was appointed associate editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (SAGE) as of January 2023.
  • Dr. Michelle Lobchuk, associate professor, was appointed as a research affiliate with the National Centre for Healthy Aging (NCHA) Australia as of January 2023.

Long service recognition

  • Dr. Michelle Lobchuk, associate professor, was recognized for 25 years of distinguished service.
  • Dr. Susan McClement, professor and (former) associate dean, research, was recognized for 25 years of distinguished service.

Promotion and tenure

  • Dr. Christine Ateah, adjunct professor, was awarded the designation of Professor Emeritus.
  • Trina Arnold was appointed as director, faculty development at the College of Nursing.
  • Dr. Lynda Balneaves, associate professor, was appointed associate dean, research, effective July 1, 2023.
  • Dr. Elsie Duff was promoted to the rank of associate professor.
  • Dr. Marie Edwards, associate professor, was appointed as the executive director, education, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

Retirements

  • Dr. Terri Ashcroft, senior instructor, has retired. She provided 23 years of teaching excellence and exemplary service, including providing leadership as the associate dean, undergraduate programs for four years.
  • Dr. Tom Hack, distinguished professor, has retired. He provided 23 years of exemplary service and is recognized internationally for his exceptional research in the area of psychosocial oncology and supporting patients coping with life-threatening cancer. He is currently providing leadership as the president of the International Psycho-Oncology Society Board of Directors.
