On March 11, a mental health awareness event was held in the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing atrium, as part of the Connecting – One Conversation at a Time initiative.
Fourth-year students Janada Ali and Alisha Thiessen hosted a promotion table with the theme “What’s your Prescription for success?”
“We wanted to facilitate conversation with nursing students to hear about what strategies they use to cope with the stress of nursing school. We know how stressful the program can be, especially with it now being condensed and running through the summer,” Thiessen said.
The students set up a spinning wheel with suggestions like “start a conversation with someone new” or “give someone a compliment.” The students would also write their coping strategies on a sticky note in a colour that corresponded with their spin on the wheel.
“We had roughly 200 students visit the table and 99 responses from students on the sticky notes. Other students could read the sticky notes and get ideas for how to cope with their own stress,” said Ali.
Connecting – One Conversation at a Time is an ongoing initiative run by adjunct professor Dr. Elaine Mordoch and instructors Shelley Marchinko and Pat Pruden.
