{"id":227,"date":"2020-02-14T09:11:12","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T15:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/?p=227"},"modified":"2020-02-14T09:11:13","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T15:11:13","slug":"informing-curricula-with-indigenous-ways-of-knowing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/informing-curricula-with-indigenous-ways-of-knowing\/","title":{"rendered":"Informing curricula with Indigenous ways of knowing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" src=\"http:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-1024x602.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-1024x602.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-768x452.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-600x353.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2020\/02\/IMG_2028_2-1-900x529.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On Dec. 13, 2019, a feast was held at <a href=\"https:\/\/umanitoba.ca\/admin\/indigenous_connect\/5558.html\">Migizii Agamik \u2013 Bald Eagle Lodge<\/a> on Fort Garry campus, marking the end of a year-long project to develop curricula for the College of Nursing and the anticipated midwifery program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, titled <em>Indigenous\nways of knowing: Developing Indigenous competencies to inform undergraduate\nmidwifery and nursing curricula<\/em>, identifies places in both the midwifery\nand nursing undergraduate academic curricula in the College of Nursing, where\nIndigenous knowledge will be threaded as learning outcomes for all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Dr. Kellie Thiessen, director of the midwifery\nprogram, the project included input from Indigenous educators, midwives and\nnurses, focusing on embedding Indigenous ways of knowing, including the\nincorporation of Indigenous core competencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a team we identified key historical events related to\nintergenerational trauma that need to be embedded throughout both curricula,\u201d\nThiessen said. \u201cWe discussed Indigenous ways of teaching and evaluating and who\nshould be involved in the delivery of Indigenous content.&nbsp; Most importantly we built relationships that\nwe will continue to cultivate to do this on-going work.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was funded by the U of M\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/umanitoba.ca\/admin\/indigenous_connect\/Indigenous-Initiatives-Fund.html\">Indigenous\nInitiatives Fund<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\nteam included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Audrey Richard, student advisor\/counsellor, Aboriginal\nNursing Cohort Initiative (ANCI), College of Nursing<\/li><li>Trina Arnold, instructor, College of Nursing<\/li><li>Darlene Birch, Indigenous registered midwife<\/li><li>Melissa Brown, Indigenous registered midwife,\n(title of Doula Initiative)<\/li><li>Delia Monias, Indigenous licensed practical nurse,\nNorway House Cree Nation<\/li><li>Debra Beach Ducharme, director, indigenous\nhealth integration, Ongomiizwin \u2013 Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing <\/li><li>Dr. Sue McClement, professor and associate dean,\nresearch, College of Nursing<\/li><li>Lauressa Garson, Indigenous nursing student,\nCollege of Nursing<\/li><li>Leah Fontaine, Indigenous initiatives educator, Advancement of Teaching\nand Learning Centre<\/li><li>Colleen Webb, educational developer, Centre\nfor the Advancement of Teaching and Learning<\/li><li>Alexandra Cropp, project coordinator, Health\nCentre of Excellence, Norway House Cree Nation <\/li><li>Mary Anne Nurmi, administrative assistant, Bachelor\nof Midwifery Program, College of Nursing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the team also created a \u201csacred hoop\u201d with\nartist\/educator Leah Fontaine (Anishinaabe\/Dakota\/Metis), Indigenous\ninitiatives educator for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning Centre. Indigenous grandparents have\nhistorically played and continue to have significant roles in the lives of grandchildren,\u201d\nFontaine said. \u201cChildren are our medicine.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fontaine said the exercise in this sacred hoop and program\nis about Indigenous visual and circular philosophical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has a combination of six or seven realities,\u201d she said. \u201cCircular\nthinking is about the capacity to look in all directions and appreciate\neverything that one can see.
