{"id":518,"date":"2021-05-19T16:20:26","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T21:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/?p=518"},"modified":"2021-06-03T11:13:09","modified_gmt":"2021-06-03T16:13:09","slug":"answering-the-call-on-national-nursing-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca\/nursing\/answering-the-call-on-national-nursing-week\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cAnswering the call\u201d on National Nursing Week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Lanette Siragusa addresses College of Nursing students.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Nursing Week was marked on May 10 \u2013 16, with the theme \u201cwe will answer the call\u201d inspired by the important role nurses have played during the global COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College of Nursing honoured the week with an online celebration on May 12 featuring a keynote presentation by Shared Health chief nursing officer and UM alumna Lanette Siragusa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the second Nursing Week that we have celebrated in the midst of a global pandemic,\u201d Siragusa said. \u201cI would like to thank all the students, staff and faculty for your contributions over the last 14 months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siragusa, a familiar face to Manitobans through her regular media briefings with chief provincial public health officer, Brent Roussin, discussed how nursing students have an opportunity in times like this to \u201cstep up and stand out\u201d in their contributions and grow in their learning alongside the rest of the health profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are the times that shape us and the times that actually change us,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m so inspired to work with all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also discussed her nursing journey, from finding her voice as a student in what was then known as the School of Nursing at UM to becoming a household name as incident commander of Manitoba&#8217;s COVID-19 response over the last 14 months. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration opened with a land acknowledgement with Tyla Turman, coordinator and academic coach of Mahkwa omushki kiim: Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education (PINE) and a prayer from Elder Margaret Lavallee, and an address from Knowledge Keeper in Residence Leslie Spillett, who spoke about the work and importance of Indigenous Nurses in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melanie MacKinnon, executive director, Ongomiizwin &#8211; Health Services spoke about her own nursing journey and how her connections to the indigenous community were able to affect positive change and offer perspective in COVID planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College of Nursing dean Dr. Netha Dyck also addressed students and presented a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iqIcCf_ziWU\">\u201cWhere are they now?\u201d video<\/a>, catching up with several alumni who are currently working throughout Manitoba and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the years, the College of Nursing has prepared nearly 10,000 nurses and nurse leaders who are providing exemplary service right here in Manitoba and, indeed, around the world,\u201d Dyck said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lanette Siragusa addresses College of Nursing students.
