CoRS students honoured at Spring Awards ceremony

The College of Rehabilitation Sciences held its Spring Awards ceremony at the Canad Inns Health Sciences Centre.

College dean Dr. Reg Urbanowski and Dr. Jacquie Ripat, associate dean (research) and professor of occupational therapy gave greetings. Ian Hay, awards committee chair emceed the event, and an opening prayer was given by Margaret Lavallee, Resident Elder at Ongomiizwin – Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing.

Eighteen awards will be presented to 29 students across the programs of occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), respiratory therapy (RT) and the master’s program in rehabilitation sciences. The total value of the awards was over $236,000.

“I know how much this means to students in their educational journeys,” Ripat said.

First-year OT student Kirsten Danyluk said she felt very honoured to receive the Royal Canadian Legion (Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario Command) Provincial Council Ladies’ Auxiliary University Scholarship, along with fellow first-year OT student Emily Klassen.

“I have family members that are veterans, so to receive the award from the Ladies’ Auxiliary was really meaningful to me,” Danyluk said.

Hunter Gamache received the Dr. A.W. Hogg Scholarship, which is awarded to the RT students with the highest academic standing in the program.

“Being recognized with this award means a lot. It’s not only recognition for the work I put into my studies, but a motivator to continue to do well in my program to be the best RT I can be,” she said.

Second-year PT student Kaitlyn Chatyrbok received the Vesalius Prize in Anatomy, which is awarded to the PT student who has attained the highest grade in the neuromusculoskeletal anatomy course.

“This is a very tough program and our class is fantastic, so it’s a great honour to get this,” she said.
