Awards and achievements

FACULTY

  • Dr. Karen Duncan, associate professor of community health sciences, was appointed to associate editor, Journal of Family and Economic Issues.
  • Dr. June Marion James, alumna and former Max Rady College of Medicine professor, received UM’s Distinguished Service Award. The first woman of colour to be admitted to what was then called the UM’s Faculty of Medicine, Dr. James was an innovator in the areas of asthma and allergy. Within the Max Rady College of Medicine, Dr. James distinguished herself as a demonstrator, clinical instructor and professor. Read more.
  • Dr. Soheila Karimi, professor of physiology and pathophysiology, has been appointed as the secretary of the International Neurotrauma Society (INTS). She also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of INTS.
  • Dr. Murdoch Leeies, department of emergency medicine director of research, has been named the CAEP 2SLGBTQIA+ Committee Chairperson in 2022.
  • Dr. Lyle McKinnon was awarded the Bhagirath Singh Early Career Award in Infection and Immunity by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Infection and Immunity (II) mandate. This prize was established in 2010 to honour the outstanding work of Dr. Bhagirath Singh, inaugural scientific director of the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) and is awarded annually to the highest ranked early career investigator in the field of infection and immunity in the spring and fall project grant competitions. Not only was Dr. McKinnon’s grant ranked No. 1 in the virology panel, but is was the highest ranked grant among ERC in at least three III-focused review panels – virology, microbiology and immunology. This is the first time that a UM faculty member has won this award.
  • Dr. Natalie Mota, associate professor of clinical health psychology, is the 2021 recipient of the Terry G. Falconer Memorial Rh Institute Foundation Emerging Researcher Award in the Health Sciences category, in recognition of her work to generate knowledge that can be used to develop and improve treatment and prevention programs for PTSD.   • Dr. Peter Nickerson, vice-dean (research), the Flynn Family Chair in Renal Transplantation, and a distinguished professor of internal medicine, is the recipient of the 2021 Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award in recognition of his 27-year research program which significantly enhances patients’ access to transplants, reduced their risk of rejection, and improved their quality of life.   • Dr. Noralou Roos, professor emerita in community health sciences, was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame on June 17, 2022 in Ottawa. Noralou was chosen for her work with Leslie Roos establishing the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and demonstrating the potential of analysis using big data systems for creative research on the broad determinants of health. Her subsequent work with colleagues across the country resulted in the establishment of the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network and her creation of EvidenceNetwork.ca connected academics to the media to promote informed public understanding of health care issues. For the last several years she has worked on a project sponsored by the Winnipeg Foundation helping Manitobans access benefits they are eligible for.   • Dr. Tanveer Sharif, Canadian Cancer Society Emerging Scholar and assistant professor of pathology, received a CIHR-ICR Early Career Investigator in Cancer Award. The award recognizes the excellence of research conducted in Canada and is presented to the top four new investigators who submitted the highest-ranking grants from the fall competition of the project scheme. Read more.
  • Dr. Kristjan Thompson, assistant professor of emergency medicine, recently won two awards – the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians’ Emergency Physician of the Year, and the Department of Emergency Medicine’s Engagement and Advocacy Award 2021-22.
  • The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy was awarded the University of Manitoba’s Outstanding Contribution to Research Award.

ALUMNI

  • Several of the 2022 University of Manitoba Distinguished Alumni Awards recipients are Max Rady College of Medicine graduates. Recipients include Dr. Arnold Naimark (Lifetime Achievement), Dr. Peter McPherson (Academic Innovation) and Dr. Carly McLellan (Outstanding Young Alumni). Read more.

STUDENTS

  • Karla Emeterio, a master’s student in the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, successfully defended her thesis on May 12, 2022.
  • Henok Gebrebrhan, a master’s student in the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, successfully defended of his thesis The rectal microbiome in HIV infected Kenyan men who have sex with men (MSM): associations with sexual behaviour and inflammation in the rectum and blood on April 7, 2022. Gebrebrhan’s advisory/thesis examining committee was Drs. Lyle McKinnon (advisor), Blake Ball (co-advisor), Paul McLaren and Eric-Jean Ghia ,and Xiao-Jian Yao, chair of the defense.
  • Pranav Mishra, a PhD student in the department of pharmacology and therapeutics, won first place and the Archie McNichol Prize at the UM Three Minute Thesis finals on April 7, 2022. Read more.
  • Mojtaba Hosseini, a PhD student in Soheila Karimi’s laboratory with the department of physiology and pathophysiology, has received a prestigious international Doctoral Trainee Grant ($100,000, 2022-2024) from the leading European Spinal Cord Injury Foundation, Wings for Life. This project aims to develop clinically feasible neural stem cell therapies for treating spinal cord injury.
  • Congratulations to Mohammad Kashem who has been awarded Emergent BioSolutions Major Student Research Award 2022.
  • Shifa Mohideen, a student in the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, won the Dr. Forough Khadem Memorial Award in the M.Sc. category. The award recognizes both scientific excellence and qualities of leadership by making outstanding contributions to the community.
  • Based on the reviewing scores collected from the three poster judges at this year’s virtual poster symposium, the winner of the 2022 Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Virtual Poster Competition is Ruth Mwatelah from the Dr. Lyle McKinnon lab. Mwatelah presented Characterization of cytokine receptor expression in the female genital tract.
  • The department of community health sciences announced the student awardees who participated in the Community Health Sciences Bold Student Poster Competition. This event was held during the annual Manitoba Health Research Poster Competition/Canadian Student Health Research Forum.
    • Garrett Johnson (master’s) – Best master’s 1st place
    • Muditha Lakmali Bodawatter Gedara (PhD) – Best theoretically framed/Best PhD 2nd place
    • Henry Ratul Halder (master’s) – Best master’s 2nd place
    • Kun Liu (master’s) – Best quantitative/best results
    • Lindsay Allen (PhD) – Best PhD 1st place/best qualitative
    • Morgan Stirling (PhD) – Best mixed methods
  • The Manitoba Emergency Medicine Research, Educational Scholarship and Quality Improvement Symposium was held on June 14, 2022. The winners of this annual event include:
    • Best R1 Critically Appraised Topic: Dr. Devon Johnstone – Comparing the Efficacy of Levetiracetam vs Phenytoin for Early Seizure Prophylaxis in Traumatic Brain Injury

  • The master of physician assistant studies (MPAS) program would like to congratulate the MPAS Class of 2022 on their successful completion and presentation of their CAPSTONE Presentations. The required CAPSTONE project allows the PA-graduate candidates to confirm the synthesis, analysis and application of knowledge applied to demonstrating mastery of the scientific process from a systematic review of material that may influence and improve physician assistant practice.
