• There are some changes in the librarian support for the Max Rady College of Medicine. Carol Cooke, who previously served as the Max Rady College of Medicine librarian, has accepted a new role as the acting head of the Health Sciences and Science Division at the University of Manitoba Libraries. In her new position, Cooke oversees the librarians supporting the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library and the Jim Peebles Science and Technology Library. Read more.

  • In August, the department of family medicine launched Med.Zero. The event, designed by Dr. Padma Mongru, program director for undergraduate education in the department of family medicine, invited the incoming UGME class to spend a half-day learning about the diverse practice of family medicine ahead of their orientation week.   • The Max Rady College of Medicine Clinician Investigator Program began its 12th year of operations in July with two new residents joining the program: Dr. Kaien Gu (rheumatology research fellow) and Dr. Therese Servito (cardiac surgery resident).

    Gu will be supervised by Dr. Betty Diamond, director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, NY, and a member of the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences. Servito will be supervised by Dr. Harindra Wijeysundera, Canada Research Chair in structural heart disease policy and outcomes, University of Toronto, and provincial cardiac lead for Ontario Health – CorHealth Ontario.

    Since inception, the Max Rady College of Medicine Clinician Investigator Program has enrolled 38 residents. Currently 16/22 CIP alumni (70%) are GFT faculty in the Max Rady College of Medicine.
  • Announcement from the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases:
    • Dr. Yoav Keynan and Dr. Jared Bullard have both been promoted to professor. These are both well deserved, and the department is very grateful for all that they contribute.
    • The department thanks Dr. Titus Olukitibi, postdoctoral fellow (Keith Fowke Lab), Joud Shehadeh, summer student (Julie Lajoie Lab) and Samuel Lawal, master’s student (Heather Armstrong Lab) who participated in Let’s Talk Science. The event engaged with more than 60 Black high school students in Winnipeg. As part of their activities, there was a lab tour led by Black graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • A new course is open for registration: PHGY 7352 Women’s Cardiovascular Health: Physiology and Pathophysiology. The course will introduce the molecular and clinical differences between men and women in regards to heart health.   • If you’re a crafting enthusiast at Bannatyne Campus, Bannatyne Stitches invites you to join a vibrant community of knitters, crocheters, beaders, embroiderers and cross-stitchers. This inclusive group meets on the last working Wednesday of each month, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library, Kerr Boardroom (Room 225). Read more.
