Department of Surgery Establishes Surgical SIMS Centre

The department of surgery is pleased to announce the development of a new Surgical Simulation (SIMS) Centre at the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. The centre will provide residents with a dedicated space to practice surgical skills, strengthen their technical abilities and enhance confidence before performing procedures in the operating room.

Simulation-based training is now an essential part of surgical education. It offers residents the opportunity to learn and improve in a safe, controlled setting, without risk to patients. The new Surgical SIMS Centre will support high-quality, hands-on learning using modern simulation tools and equipment.

This initiative represents an important investment in surgical education, research and patient safety. The centre will also support recruitment and retention efforts by ensuring Manitoba continues to offer strong, competency-based surgical training aligned with national standards.

Training and collaboration

The Surgical SIMS Centre will be available to residents 24/7, allowing flexible, self-directed practice. It will complement the work of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Facility (CLSF) by providing additional space for technical skills sessions, workshops and structured teaching.

The department is also engaging with industry partners to explore potential collaborations and equipment support, helping ensure the centre remains up to date with the latest surgical training technologies.

Leadership and development

The project has been led by Dr. Nafisa Dharamsi, director of postgraduate medical education, who has worked over several years to move this initiative forward. She has collaborated with CLSF leadership, reviewed equipment options, and gathered resident feedback to help design a space that meets educational needs.

Dr. Giuseppe Retrosi, chair of CUSEC, has also provided valuable guidance, sharing his expertise in surgical education and simulation to help shape the centre’s design and training approach.

Looking Ahead

The Surgical SIMS Centre will include laparoscopic trainers, ultrasound simulators and other advanced tools that support hands-on learning and performance feedback. Residents will be able to practice and refine their skills in a consistent and structured way, helping improve overall surgical readiness and patient outcomes.

Details about the official opening and orientation sessions will be shared in the coming months.
