We recently enjoyed an evening of celebrating educator excellence and student achievement.
The 16th annual Max Rady College of Medicine Teacher Recognition and Manitoba Medical Students’ Association Awards Dinner took place on February 26 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

We had a wonderful turnout with more than 160 members of the college community in attendance.
Four awards were presented to medical students who have distinguished themselves in the categories of global health, citizenship, community service and leadership.
I sat down with Dr. Philip Berger, a member of the University of Manitoba MD Class of 1974, for an insightful Q&A session. The champion for human rights and social justice shared inspiring advice and stories from a medical career that spans more than 50 years. You can read about our talk on UM Today.
We also gathered to celebrate excellence in teaching. More than 300 nominations for teaching awards in 21 categories were submitted by our current Med II, Med III and Med IV students in recognition of their teachers during the 2024-25 academic year. Many of these educators were nominated in multiple categories.
Our medical students nominate teachers who ignite their passions for learning and service, demonstrate equitable treatment of every student, and show empathy, humility and compassion.
Learners admire teachers who are generous with their time, and with sharing their life experiences. They seek to emulate faculty members who are inclusive, responsive and patient. They respect those who motivate and challenge them in their learning. And of course, students enjoy faculty members who transmit knowledge in creative and engaging ways.
I want to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to our faculty for their dedicated work to create a learning environment that prepares medical students to become competent, caring and ethical physicians who meet their responsibilities to patients and the community.
We value each and every one of you for your commitment to medical education.
Thank you for your important work.
