Dr. Joe Kaufert, a founding member of the department of community health sciences, passed away on Oct. 2 at the age of 80. He was instrumental in developing and supporting many of the educational initiatives and research areas for which the department is well known. He and his wife, Dr. Patricia Kaufert, developed the department’s graduate program, and their vision allowed for the creation of a program that has remained strong over time, and has been replicated at other Canadian universities. His research earned international acclaim, and had significant local and wider impact. His recent work with undergraduate medical education and Manitoba Harvest was groundbreaking as well. He mentored faculty and graduate students, taught highly subscribed courses and was a gracious friend to so many. His passing is a great loss to the department of community health sciences and broader university.

Dr. Paul Wawryko, an assistant professor of pathology, passed away on Dec. 9 at the age of 41. He is remembered as an excellent pathologist and an outstanding diagnostician. He was a genuinely kind, generous individual who always managed to be polite, respectful, humble and forgiving. He was always available to help and improve patient care and the environment related to education and clinical service. A UM alumnus, he earned his bachelor of science in 2002, and his bachelor of science in medicine and medical degree in 2006. He began his career at the St. Boniface Hospital as a pathologist and at the department of pathology in 2011. His passing is a great loss to the department and the medical community.
