The RFHS core facilities invite users to submit research images captured using core facility equipment for the first annual Image of the Year competition.

Deadline: December 31, 2025
Eligibility: Images from studies active between January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025
Submit up to 3 images with minimal post-processing.

News from the department of medical microbiology and infectious diseases

  • Dr. Jason Kindrachuk, associate professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, and UM Canada Research Chair in the molecular pathogenesis of emerging viruses, has been named head of the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. 
  • Dr. George Zhanel, professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, and his team published a Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy supplement publication of their 17-year CANWARD study.
  • Bisi Akinlabi, a postdoc in Dr. Lyle McKinnon’s lab, placed second at the 3 Minute Postdoctoral Presentation held in September.
  • Titus Olukitibi, postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Keith Fowke’s lab, organized the third edition of the Scientific Spelling Bee Competition (SPELBEC-Science) that took place in September. Olukitibi’s outreach initiative helps students become familiar with scientific terms and their meanings.
  • Ryan Ha passed his master of science oral thesis examination in June.
  • Marnie Willman successfully defended her PhD thesis.
  • Candice Lemaille passed her master of science oral thesis examination in June.
  • Erwin Taguiam passed his master of science oral thesis examination in June.
  • Rose Chan successfully defended their master’s thesis in July.
  • Jack Vallis successfully passed his MSc oral thesis examination in August.
  • Faisal Nuhu successfully defended his master of science thesis in August.

News from the department of surgery

  • Department of surgery establishes Surgical SIMS Centre: The department of surgery is pleased to announce the development of a new Surgical Simulation (SIMS) Centre at Health Sciences Centre. The centre will provide residents with a dedicated space to practice surgical skills, strengthen their technical abilities, and enhance confidence before performing procedures in the operating room.   • Manitoba’s First Surgical Robot Unveiled at Health Sciences Centre: Manitoba’s first surgical robot, Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Xi, was unveiled by Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg, the HSC Foundation and the Province of Manitoba. Read more

News from ​Dr. Meghan Azad’s THRiVE Discovery Lab

  • Researchers from the MuMi (Multi-omics Milk) Study gathered for their first in-person Hackathon, led by Dr. Meghan Azad, professor of pediatrics and child health and UM Canada Research Chair in early nutrition and the developmental origins of health and disease, and co-investigator Dr. Nima Aghaeepour from Stanford University. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the MuMi Study is analyzing more than 1,600 human milk samples using multi-omics to uncover how milk composition affects child health. Read more
  • On August 1, THRiVE Lab members and colleagues hosted the second annual Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on the r/AskScience forum on Reddit ahead of World Breastfeeding Week. This was an opportunity to take a step back from our day-to-day work and get a snapshot of what the general public is wondering about lactation science. Read more
  • In recognition of National Breastfeeding Week, THRiVE Lab member and MILC Club Coordinator Dr. Karinne Cardoso Muniz, led a team of volunteers from both groups in sharing their expertise with the Winnipeg community. The outreach events took place at Harvey Smith Library on Oct. 1 and St. Vital Library on Oct. 2. Read more
  • During National Breastfeeding Week THRiVE Lab Director Dr. Meghan Azad joined Maralee Caruso on CTV Winnipeg to discuss the many benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies. Read more

  • Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) is a national non-profit knowledge mobilization organization with an aim to co-create and share resources to improve emergency care of children. It’s host institute is the University of Manitoba and located at Children’s Research Institute of Manitoba.
