On April 16, 2020, Dr. Claude Murphy passed away peacefully, at the age of 101 years.
Dr. Murphy was instrumental in founding the University of Manitoba’s department of family medicine and establishing our province’s first residency program at the Family Medicine Centre at St. Boniface Hospital.
In addition to being a dedicated teacher, he was an engaged physician leader, serving as President of the Manitoba College of Family Physicians 1967 to 1968 and President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada 1972 to 1973.
Recognizing his many contributions to family medicine, the Manitoba College of Family Physicians established an award in his name, the Claude H. Murphy Award, which is given to a member who wishes to develop or improve his/her skills as a teacher and preceptor of medical trainees.
