Dr. Brian Postl, Dean, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba and Dr. Perry Gray, Provincial Lead, Medical Specialist Services & CMO, Shared Health are very pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. José François as Head, Department of Family Medicine (pending board approval) and Provincial Specialty Lead, Family Medicine effective December 1, 2018 for a five-year term.

Dr. François was first appointed as Head of the Family Medicine Department in 2013; he was appointed Medical Director – Family Medicine, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority the same year.

Dr. François received his medical degree from the Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke (Québec), and completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Manitoba. He went on to complete a Masters in Medical Education at the University of Dundee, Dundee (Scotland).

Since first joining the faculty in 2005, Dr. François has held a number of academic appointments in the medical college, including Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development; Acting Head, Department of Medical Education; and Program Lead, Bilingual Family Medicine Residency Program.

He also serves as Co-Chair, Provincial Clinical Team – Primary Health & Community Services; Chair, Association of Canadian Chairs of Family Medicine (ACCFM); Manuscript reviewer, Canadian Family Physician; and Member, Board of Directors, St-Boniface Hospital.

Dr. François has been active in many initiatives aiming to improve access and quality of primary care including advanced access scheduling, shared-care models and interprofessional teams and has been recognized through several awards, including the Margaret-Teresa McDonnell Award; the Canadian Associate for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Excellence; and the Janus Research Grant – College of Family Physicians of Canada.

We are very pleased that Dr. François has accepted his reappointment as Head, Department of Family Medicine, University of Manitoba and the appointment as Provincial Specialty Lead, Family Medicine, Shared Health and we look forward to continuing to work with him in this capacity.
