In line with the Max Rady College of Medicine’s social justice (equity, access and participation), anti-racism and Indigenous achievement commitments, we are welcoming an ever-increasingly diverse body of medical students into our community.
At the same time, we are in a complex global environment with intensifying polarization. The increase in anti-Semitism, rise in Islamophobia, attacks on trans human rights and gender affirming care, and racist backlash as evidenced by actions like the U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action in college admissions all impact our medical community. They influence the experiences of faculty, staff and learners.
We are currently recruiting a diverse pool of mentors who will be able to provide identity-based mentorship and support to this highly diverse and valued medical student body.
The roles are:
- Black Physician Mentor
- Disabled Physician Mentor
- Filipino Physician Mentor
- Jewish Physician Mentor
- Muslim Physician Mentor
- 2SLGBTQIA+ Physician Mentor
Identities are complex and multi-faceted, and we acknowledge that not every medical student will necessarily see themselves represented in the current physician mentor roles we are recruiting for. We want to acknowledge the other mentorship programs that are available, such as through Doctors Manitoba, and also note that this is a starting point, not an end point.
These physician mentors will report to Dr. Marcia Anderson, Vice-Dean Indigenous Health, Social Justice and Anti-Racism. Regular meetings with all mentors and Dr. Anderson will occur to provide collegial support, and to identify barriers and opportunities for collaboration and strategic change. Some administrative support will be available for these roles.
If you are a physician with a current UM appointment and interested in one of the physician mentor roles, please send a cover letter and CV to Dr. Marcia Anderson by April 5, 2024 (Marcia.Anderson@umanitoba.ca). You are encouraged to self-identify with any of your social identities that you believe influences your practice of medicine, role in the faculty, and ability to provide support to learners.
Dr. Peter Nickerson
