On behalf of Dr. Jillian Horton, the following courses are being offered as part of the Alan Klass Program in Health and Humanities for the 2019 fall term.

There is no charge for these courses.

Courses are open to staff, faculty, med students and residents.

Narrative Medicine
Instructor: Maurice Mierau 
Dates: October 21  – December 9, 2019

This course will provide numerous opportunities and prompts for guided, reflective writing in the context of narrative medicine. Students will learn to connect the narrative elements of medicine with narrative in the humanities by being engaged as readers, writers and medical professionals. Specifically, students will develop writing, listening, and speaking skills that have immediate professional utility. Positive health outcomes depend on communication, empathy and collaboration, all skills that are integral to narrative medicine. The course consists of eight two-hour sessions, and is designed for those who have not previously studied narrative medicine; no reading or writing outside class will be required.

Story Doctor
Instructor: GMB Chomichuk 
Dates: October 23 – December 11, 2019

In this course students will use a variety of demonstrated tool of self-reflection to turn their own experiences into stories built from words, pictures or any combination of both. You’ll tell your own stories using words and pictures. The ability to draw or write is NOT a prerequisite as the course is designed to take the ingredients of life and turn them INTO the ingredients of stories. All genres and story types are welcome so long as they have the idea originates within the storyteller’s own experience. A variety of stories can be explored that reflect the storyteller’s interest.

Improving Communication through Improvisation
Instructors: Tim Webster & Joanne Parker
Dates: November 20, 2019 – January 29, 2020

The ability to display confidence, poise, creativity and self-discipline in common communication scenarios will enable health care learners to provide a higher standards of health care as professionals in the future.
