Dr. Mike Harlos Awarded CHPCA Award of Pediatric Excellence

Congratulations to Dr. Mike Harlos, Section Head of Palliative Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and Medical Director for the WRHA’s Palliative Care Program. Harlos received the Canadian Hospice and Palliative Care Association’s Award of Pediatric Excellence on September 21, 2017.

The award recognizes an exemplary CHPCA member devoted to pediatric hospice palliative care in Canada. To be a recipient of this award, the nominee must have made an impact at the national level and contributed to the mission of CHPCA by enhancing the quality of life for individuals and their loved ones who are facing a life threatening illness and bereavement.

Harlos has a distinguished background in palliative care. He founded the Canadian Network of Palliative Care for Children after completing his sabbatical in pediatric palliative care 12 years ago, and co-chaired the group for seven years. Over the years, pediatric palliative care has grown tremendously in Canada, and is now a formal subspecialty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The Canadian Hospice and Palliative Care Association also has a more general Award of Excellence which dates back many years and reflects a broader contribution to palliative care in Canada. Harlos received that award in 2006.
