Announcement: New Associate Dean, Research Appointed

Dr. Brian Postl, Dean, Max Rady College of Medicine and Dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and Dr. Peter Nickerson, Vice-Dean, Research, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jude Uzonna as Associate Dean, Research in the Max Rady College of Medicine. As Associate Dean, Research Dr. Uzonna will provide strategic leadership to foster and enhance the research environment of the Max Rady College of Medicine.

Dr. Uzonna, professor in the departments of immunology and medical microbiology/infectious diseases at the University of Manitoba, obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with distinctions from the University of Nigeria and a PhD degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1998. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia from 2000-2004.

Dr. Uzonna joined the University of Manitoba in 2004 as an assistant professor. He was a Research Manitoba Chair Professor from 2010 to 2016. His research focuses on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate induction, maintenance and loss of protective immunity against parasitic infections with a goal to develop effective vaccines and/or vaccination strategies against these infections. He has mentored many trainees who are currently working in various fields including research, academia, and biotechnology.

Dr. Uzonna has been very successful in attracting millions of dollars in research funding from several organizations including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, National Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Research Manitoba.His research is currently funded by CIHR and NSERC.

He has received numerous professional, academic, teaching, research and community awards, including most recently the Canadian Society for Immunology (CSI) Investigator Award, Ken Hughes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biomedical Research, Health Sciences Graduate Student Association Outstanding Mentorship Award and Manitoba Black Community Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mentoring and Education. He is (or has served as) a member of the editorial board of many international and high impact journals and has extensive grant review experience including reviewing for NIH, CIHR, NSERC, Genome Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Medical Research Council (Britain).

Dr. Nickerson sincerely thanks Dr. Kevin Coombs, for his dedicated service as Assistant Dean, Research in the Max Rady College of Medicine for the past 10 years. During this time, the research enterprise in the Max Rady College of Medicine increased to over $100-million annually and Dr. Coombs was a steady support to researchers in the college overseeing the internal review of grant applications and establishing innovative approaches to enhance tri-agencies’ funding to college research endeavours.
