Dr. Mandy Archibald, assistant professor of nursing and researcher with the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), is principal investigator for “A living lab for mental health in youth-onset Type 2 diabetes,” awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Re-search (CIHR)/Sick Kids Foundation grant of $287,276.

“Dietary fibre in IBD: Feeding our microbes vs. fueling inflammation,” awarded $1,000,000 from the Weston Family Foundation.

Ruth Barclay [BMRPT/87, PhD/08], associate professor of physical therapy, is a co-investigator for “Exploring methods to improve participation of women in clinical trials to help enhance stroke recovery research,” awarded $105,000 from the Brain Canada – Women’s Brain Health Initiative.

James Blanchard [B.Sc.(Med.)/86, MD/86], professor of community health sciences, Canada Research Chair in epidemiology and global public health, and executive director of the Institute for Global Public Health, was awarded $4,351,013 by the Gates (Bill and Melinda) Foundation for “Strengthening the effectiveness of the HIV prevention in Kenya.”

Dr. Amine Choukou, assistant professor of occupational therapy, is a principal applicant and prairie lead for the Early Professionals, Inspired Careers in Agetech Health Research Training Platform, awarded $2.4 million by the CIHR.

Renée El-Gabalawy [B.Sc./08, MA/10, PhD/15], associate professor of clinical health psychology, received the Aubie Angel Young Investigator Award in Clinical Research. The award recognizes distinguished research in the clinical sciences.

Dr. Sherif Eltonsy, assistant professor of pharmacy and researcher with CHRIM, is a principal applicant and Manitoba lead for the Canadian Mother-Child Collaborative Health Research Training Platform, which received more than $2.5 million from the CIHR.

Dr. Joanne Embree, professor of pediatrics/child health and medical microbiology/infectious diseases, and researcher with CHRIM, received the 2022 Alan Ross Award, the most prestigious honour given by the Canadian Pediatric Society. The award recognizes lifelong excellence in pediatric research, education, health care and advocacy.

Dr. Jason Kindrachuk, assistant professor of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, Canada Research Chair in molecular pathogenesis of emerging and re-emerging viruses and researcher with CHRIM, received the Ken Hughes Young Investigator Award in Medical Research.

Terry Klassen [B.Sc.(Med.)/82, MD/82], professor of pediatrics and child health and Canada Research Chair in clinical trials, is principal investigator for “Knowledge to action in pediatric emergency care during the COVID-19 pandemic,” awarded $433,790 from the CIHR.

Dr. Hagar Labouta, assistant professor of pharmacy and CHRIM researcher, has been awarded $160,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund to acquire high-resolution tools to examine how nanoparticles bind to cells, proteins and other biomolecules. Labouta also received $300,000 from the CIHR/Sick Kids Foundation for research on nanotherapies to treat pregnancy-associated breast cancer.

Dr. Chris Pascoe, assistant professor of physiology and pathophysiology and CHRIM researcher, and Dr. Tanveer Sharif received $328,744 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund to acquire technology to examine relationships between cell-specific RNA profiles and structural changes in chronic disease.

– resistance and control, is principal investigator for “COVID-19 pandemic concealing a syndemic of concern: Sex, gender, methamphetamine and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections in people living with HIV in Manitoba,” awarded $361,400 from the CIHR.

Roberta Woodgate [BN/89, MN/93, PhD/01], distinguished professor of nursing, Canada Research Chair in child and family engagement in health research and healthcare and researcher with CHRIM, leads “Advancing patient-centred care in young people living with chronic pain,” awarded a CIHR grant of $600,524. Woodgate also received $546,976 from the CIHR for “Mobilizing communities: Enhancing partnerships between schools and youth hubs for mental health and well-being” and $425,954 for “Addressing the indirect and wider health impacts of COVID-19 on families of children living with disabilities.”
